The Oaxacan Coast

A STATE OF MIND

Tucked away along the Oaxacan coastline, lies the destination you seek, Puerto Escondido. It’s not that time slows down here. It’s more like each moment becomes richer, deeper and more rewarding. Happily immersed in Oaxaca’s simple pleasures, your true nature awakens. Adventurer. Foodie. Yogi. Nature lover. Surfer. Beachcomber. Global escape artist. Even passions you haven’t discovered. (And soon will.) In Puerto Escondido, you find the destination you seek: inviting, enticing and mesmerizing. But this is only the beginning. Because what you truly find here is yourself.

PEOPLE & CULTURE

Enter a world that’s surprisingly diverse in its only-here kaleidoscope of indigenous cultures. Where colorful textiles, tapestries, folk art and festivals—like the Guelaguetza and Dia de los Muertos—come alive. A Mexican town might give you a glimpse into daily life. And the locals are as warm as the near-perfect weather—all smiles as you learn to say Oaxaca (wa-HA-ka) like a native.

QUINTESSENTIAL CUISINE

Take the time to revel in your food again in Oaxaca—Mexico’s gastronomic capital. Where a diversity of vibrant regional cuisine (think seven kinds of mole) is crafted with love from flavorful farm- and sea-to-table bounty. Savor a mix of must-try local street vendors, beachfront restaurants and fine-dining favorites. Or gather fresh ingredients at the mercado to play chef on your own.

BIODIVERSITY BEYOND BELIEF

Mexico is one of only 17 mega-diverse countries. And Oaxaca is Mexico’s most biodiverse place. That puts you in the green heart of some of the richest natural landscapes on the planet. Scores of mountains cascading into oceans and lakes are the lifeblood of Oaxacans—ripe with coffee plantations, fishing lagoons and watermelon fields. Not to mention the perfect playground for outdoor pursuits.

PUERTO
ESCONDIDO

SURF, SAND AND SUNSETS

Follow Playa Palmarito’s shores, and you’ll eventually happen upon a small beach town where fast-paced just does not exist. The name says it all, Puerto Escondido (“Hidden Port”). Aptly named because you won’t find any mainstream chains here, or people rushing to get somewhere. This is a place where you can finally catch up with yourself and your loved ones. Where nomads and tourists are welcomed home. It’s “The Spot” to find sumptuous local cuisine, laid-back bars, and beach hangouts where you can watch the adventurous take part in the epic surf and cap the day off with a mesmerizing sunset.

THE SCENIC ROUTE

Located just off Highway 200 (Carretera Pacífico), stretching the length of the Pacific Coast from Mexico to Alaska, Vivo is also accessible via taxi, bus or car.

From Oaxaca City, travel currently takes about seven hours. But highway construction underway, slated for completion in 2022, will significantly reduce travel times from Oaxaca City and interior Mexico to Puerto Escondido.
